MOYA: Student-Led Creative Enterprise

West College Scotland – Design and Media Department

MOYA (Minds of Young Artists) is a student-led creative enterprise embedded across all NC, HNC and HND programmes in Design and Media at West College Scotland. Students from disciplines including Graphic Design, Animation, Interior Design, Photography and Media collaborate to deliver real creative services to clients. Through MOYA, learners gain practical experience of working with clients, producing creative work and developing the entrepreneurial skills needed to succeed in the creative industries.

Context and Rationale

The creative industries have expanded rapidly in recent years, with many practitioners working freelance or combining multiple creative services within portfolio careers. In response to this professional landscape, MOYA was established to equip students with the enterprise skills required to thrive within the sector.

The initiative aims to empower students by giving them experience of running a creative enterprise as part of their studies. Students collaborate with peers and staff to manage real projects and respond to client briefs, helping them understand how creative ideas are translated into professional work.

By embedding entrepreneurial learning across multiple courses, MOYA helps students develop industry-ready skills such as client communication, project delivery and marketing. The initiative also encourages students to identify opportunities within the creative marketplace and promote their work through social media and public showcase events.

The Learning Activity

MOYA operates through a programme-wide approach in which students and staff work together as collaborators within a creative production environment. Live client requests are received through the MOYA platform and aligned with relevant courses and curriculum outcomes.

Students contribute to one of three main areas within the enterprise:

Studio by MOYA provides photography and media services, including studio sessions and live photo shoots for both domestic and business clients. This includes portrait sessions, pet photography, event shoots and promotional content.

MOYA Graphics and Animation delivers design services such as branding, logo design, posters, social media content, album covers and promotional materials for community organisations and businesses.

MOYA Spaces focuses on interior design projects, offering consultations and visual concepts such as mood boards and design proposals for residential and commercial clients.

Many projects involve collaboration across disciplines. For example, large-scale creative work such as music promotions, filmed interviews or live performance shoots bring together photographers, designers, media students and interior designers working as a coordinated team.

Students participate in client consultations, develop design briefs and deliver final outcomes within agreed deadlines. MOYA teams are organised at the start of each term and have dedicated working sessions where students manage bookings, organise shoots and coordinate project delivery.

Assessment is aligned with MOYA activities, allowing staff to evaluate student learning through real client work while ensuring curriculum outcomes are achieved.

Skills and Capabilities Developed

MOYA provides students with hands-on experience of creative enterprise, helping them develop a wide range of professional and entrepreneurial skills.

Students strengthen client engagement and consultation skills through direct interaction with clients and by responding to real project briefs. Collaborative work within MOYA teams develops teamwork, communication and project management skills, as students coordinate tasks and meet deadlines.

Learners also gain practical experience of pricing work, ordering materials and managing production processes, helping them understand the commercial realities of creative practice. Marketing activities such as social media promotion and public showcase events strengthen branding and promotional skills.

Through these experiences, students develop confidence, adaptability and time management while learning how creative ideas can generate real value within the marketplace.

Impact and Outcomes

MOYA has helped students build confidence in working with live clients and delivering professional creative projects both independently and as part of a team. Through direct engagement with industry-style briefs, students develop strong organisational, communication and coordination skills.

The enterprise regularly delivers commissioned work including photography sessions, promotional design, event materials and branded merchandise. Products created through MOYA include items such as prints, clothing, tote bags, mugs and other creative merchandise that are sold to the public at events and showcases.

By integrating enterprise activity within the curriculum, MOYA reduces duplication across assessments and allows students to demonstrate their learning through authentic projects. The initiative has gained recognition for its strong industry engagement and has contributed to the department’s reputation for entrepreneurial learning within the creative industries.

“I wish I had a MOYA back in my day.”
